Dave could have been a goddamn paleontologist. Although that is probably not what would have happened, it is kind of bringing up something here.Dave, and the other kids, didn’t plan on this whole adventure happening. They just thought it would be some cool game. (Dave didn’t want to play it, but I digress.) They probably thought they were going to do something else with their lives. They might not have known what, but they probably had some idea.
Rose, for example, probably wanted to go to college. I imagine her thinking about different places she would want to go. She also never got to publish a book.Who knows what John and Jade wanted to do. John never got to meet Nicolas Cage and pull some grand prank, I suppose. Jade never got to see much beyond her island.
This is one of the most heartbreaking updates in awhile because it shows what was lost and not just in the physical sense. They lost their futures, their hopes and dreams.
Now excuse me while I go cry over Dave.

In The Incredibles, Helen got the jet from her old sidekick and pilot when she was Elastigirl. Originally, he would have also flown the plane and gotten killed when it was shot down, thus raising the stakes for the characters. The animators convinced Brad Bird to have Helen fly the plane herself, rather than spending money on a minor character for only a few minutes of screen time. The shot of Helen watching the destroyed plane sink into the ocean was apparently filmed when the script still called for Snug’s death, explaining her overlong look as the wreckage sinks because, as filmed, it contained the corpse of her friend.
